Our 125th year of serving the people of God in Coney Island

On January 5th, 2024, Fr. Javier’s time as pastor came to a close when he was recalled by the Vocationist Order to Florham Park, New Jersey.  A new parish administrator, Fr. Ignacio Gogollodo Jr. S.D.V., was appointed to take over the parish. He was joined by Rev. Roberto Da Silva, S.D.V. to assume duties as parocihal vicar and head the Spanish-language ministry. Fr. Rowland remained in residence and continued as chaplain of Saints Joachim and Anne Nursing facility.

From his first day forward, Fr. Ignacio brought a new energy to the parish as reached out to his parishioners, getting to know its different groups and enlarging participation in activities and ministries. The parish’s pledges and giving in the 2024 Annual Catholic Appeal not only resulted in exceeding the diocesan parish-assigned goal, but reaching new heights for the parish.

The year 2025 is very special jubilee year for Shrine Church of Our Lady of Solace as it celebrates four prominent anniversaries:

  1. 125th Anniversary of the founding of the parish (1900-2025)
  2. 120th Anniversary of its dedication and blessing as a Shrine by Saint Pope Pius X (1905-2025)
  3. 100th Anniversary of the completion and dedication of the current church building (1925-2025)
  4. 10th Anniversary of the rebuilding, restoration and rededication of the church building (2015-2025

In keeping with a tradition of the parish since its first Mass was celebrated on November 4th, 1900 in a former dance hall with park bench pews, a Crucifix and candles from parishioners’ homes, and a broken refrigerator turned on its side to serve as the altar topped with a tablecloth, the morning Mass on the First Saturday of each month continues to be offered for the souls still suffering in Purgatory.

And, as with all things, the story of Shrine Church of Our Lady of Solace continues…
