The regular Mass schedule the Sunday that followed the Sandy disaster took place in the church. Through his leadership and determination, he organized relief efforts and worked tirelessly to make sure that the church, rectory, and convent would simply be restored, but better than before the storm. The rectory basement was completely rebuilt with a new food pantry for Catholic Charities, and bright, attractive meeting rooms comprising a new Parish Center. The disused convent chapel, for decades just another meeting space, returned to its original purpose and was refurbished as a beautiful new chapel for daily Masses and Perpetual Adoration. There is so much Fr. Armando has done for our parish, and all while also serving as the General Councilor for Vocationist Parishes Worldwide. We owe him our thanks, our best wishes, and our prayers for his continuing ministry as he leaves for Rome.
WITH GRATEFUL THANKS TO FATHER ARMANDO PALMIERI, S.D.V.!
In 2011 after 111 years under the administration of diocesan priests, the Shrine Church of Our Lady of Solace welcomed a religious order, the Vocationist Fathers, to take over its administration. It became the first Vocationist patish not only in New York City, but New York State as well. Fr. Armando Palmieri, S.D.V., had been serving as Pastor of St. Nicholas R. C. Church in Palisades Park, New Jersey. Upon the reassignment of Fr. Patrick West as Pastor of Corpus Christi Parish in Woodside, Fr. Armando was appointed first as Administrator, then as Pastor of Our Lady of Solace. In these two and a half short years his accomplishments for our parish have been extraordinary (chapel for Eucharistic Adoration and weekday Masses, the Russolillo Parish Center, refurbished lighting and electrical system in the church, expansion of spiritual devotions and evangelization efforts, to name a few. But the greatest of all was how Fr. Armando brought the parish back from the devastation of Superstorm Sandy’s wrath, starting with the cleanup of the church and bringing a sense of normalcy, even with no electricity and heat.
FR. ARMANDO’S FINAL MASS IS SUNDAY, AUGUST 31st AT 9:30 AM (WITH CHOIRS)
